Worker Training on Personal Protective Equipment Usage

Personal protective equipment must be used correctly for wearers to fully benefit from their use. Although the concept of correct use of personal protective equipment is generally straight forward, the challenges on a day-to-day basis for employers that wish to implement personal protective equipment usage remain problematic. Many countries have implemented Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) performance standards and manufacturers have risen to the requirements of manufacturing to those standards. However, the proper use of PPE in the workplace is still largely unregulated. Some PPE, such as respiratory protection devices, can be required by regulations, but the practical implementation of their use can be limited by regulations that are often very generic, with insufficient specific guidance to compliance officers and company safety officers to effectively implement. Although the regulatory climate for respirator usage is non-specific in many instances, the challenge facing safety officers is to achieve a constructive program that advances worker protection objectives in practical and cost effective ways. A simple yet direct approach to educate wearers of respiratory protective equipment has been used extensively in many countries with large numbers of workers. This presentation will highlight the 4 Step Method for Respiratory protection, its benefits and outcomes.
