Performance-based fire safety design in buildings has been widely accepted throughout the world. However, performance features for safety design in building have traditionally been designed using historical statistical data, or just the data from previous experiences and do not always accurately correspond to the unique characteristics of the building. Evacuation performance is one of the main factors to be determined and is the most challenging parameter due to the complex human behavior exhibited during the evacuation process. As the complexity and innovation in modern building design increases, the historical methods to determine the evacuation performance features in safety design are becoming insufficient. Moreover, in reality, it is impossible to conduct an evacuation experiment to determine the evacuation performance before construction, and is also difficult to collect the accurate features in a simulated building condition during the prescribed emergency situations. A new method, a building information modeling (BIM)-based Immersive Serious Gaming environment is proposed, which provides an immersive emergency evacuation scenario to solicit the behavior decisions made by the players. Evacuation performance data is contemporaneously from the players playing the game. The interaction between occupants (players) and the building during evacuation are studied to determine evacuation performance and provide behavioral data for the evacuation performance evaluation of the building design. This research will extend the study and adaptability of serious computer games in performance-based safety design.
