Over the last couple of years, large high-resolution displaysrnhave become popular in research and industry. Becausernof their large screen area they have been used for the visualizationrnof large data sets as well as for collaborativernresearch. However, when dealing with large displays, itrnbecomes apparent that there is a lack of appropriate inputrndevices for interaction of multiple users with visualizationsrnon a large-scale display. Many input devices for desktoprnPCs do not scale with the number of users or with the sizernof screens. In this paper, we present an interaction methodrnthat addresses this problem by giving each user a separaterninteraction device, which serves both as an input device byrnmeans of a camera, a small keyboard and touch input, asrnwell as an output device capable of displaying rich text orrnsmall graphics in addition to the data that is being displayedrnon the large screen. The technology we present is based onrntwo-dimensional barcodes and uses camera-equipped cellrnphones with touch screens as universal input/output devicesrnfor high-resolution displays, which communicate with eachrnother over a wireless network. This approach allows us tornaddress general problems of collaborative work with largerndisplays, e.g., how to restrict access to information and howrnto customize data presentation for different users. We describernimplementation details of our system and demonstraternits use in two application scenarios on a 23 × 9 ft.rntiled display wall.
