Composite materials properties of low weight, corrosion resistance, and formability are attractive in the offshore installations, especially as these evolve towards unmanned and deep water types. Composites can be used to form cost-effective primary structures such as decks and whole topsides. A Limit State based design methodology allows structural safety equivalent to that inherent in conventional designs to be achieved, while adequately taking into account hygrothermal effects. The structural form and the processing method are key determinants of overall economy. The safety issues of fire and impact performance can now be addressed by predictive methods as well as by test.
