A novel technique developed by Cogent has been used to install fibre-optic cables up to 15 km long into underground pipelines using the drag forces generated by pipeline product flow. This paper describes the salient features of the technique, installation modelling and limitations. The technique can be applied to a range of cable sizes and pipeline products, the limitations depending primarily on the flow speeds and difference in density between the cable and pipeline product.
