An atmospheric-pressure microwave-plasma reactor was used to synthesize nanocarbon materials. This was accomplished by passing mixtures containing ethanol and water through the reactor. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy were used to characterize the obtained materials. Graphitic particles, carbon black, and amorphous carbon were formed over different ranges of applied conditions. The applied microwave power was found to significantly affect the structure of the synthesized material. The effect of increasing the amount of water in the mixtures was also studied. Increasing the volume percentage of water was found to suppress the formation of graphitic particles.
