Port of San Diego Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Plan (Climate Plan) and the Road Ahead

Many local jurisdictions are addressing climate change on a local scale by developing climate action plans (CAPs) that present measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from sources over which they have direct control. In Fall 2010, the Port of San Diego (Port) began development of a Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Plan (Climate Plan). The Climate Plan is envisioned as an important tool for future planning and development of tidelands under the Port's jurisdiction as it would help the Port identify, assess, and develop strategies which can help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and address local vulnerabilities to climate change. The Climate Plan could also be a tool for streamlining climate change evaluation under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) for future planning. The Climate Plan can potentially be referenced for environmental review of future projects with regard to CEQA Guidelines. The Climate Plan also focuses on regional adaptation strategies pertaining to sea level rise, water reuse and efficiency, and beach erosion, as well as energy demand issues.
