Oil-Free, Chip-Free: What Does It Mean and Why Is It So Important?

Oil removal and elimination of metal chips (and burrs) are of major importance for any cleaning requirement. This presentation will attempt to review various methods and processes for oil and chip removal in an aqueous cleaning system. It will include application and concept of different equipment for an oil separation (oil decant, oil removal, or oil splitting system), and filtration & ultra-filtration in an aqueous cleaning system. Solvent degreasing is convenient, fast and relatively easy method for oil removal. The regulatory compliance along with health and safety concerns have gradually diminished the usage of most solvents. This has resulted in a shift to aqueous cleaning for oil and chip removal. Oil removal can be accomplished with the aid of an oil separation system, design of which may be selected based on the amount of oil on the components and the design concept of a washer. Appropriate design and location of a filtration unit can provide a useful tool for chip removal. Along with filtration, proper design of a washer and positioning of parts in a washer are of major significance in successful removal of metal chips and (clinging) burrs.
