While CBN grinding wheels may provide significant performance advantages when compared to Al_2O_3 in the grinding of hardened steels, their effectiveness can be significantly improved with the correct selection of grinding fluids. Not only can life and, thus, cost effectiveness of these tools be improved but also quality of the part being ground. As demands on part quality increase, with respect to surface finish and fatigue life, more emphasis will be placed on the effects of process parameters. Grinding fluids will play an important part in these developments. Although the type of grinding fluid will be a significant factor when optimizing the importance of a grinding wheel, the method of applying the fluid must be considered as well. Correct placement, as well as the use of a high pressure delivery system to cool and clean the wheel and grind zone, can significantly improve the grinding process. Together, enormous performance benefits can be realized.
