Development of an E-learning System Using Cyber Japan Map System for an Elementary School Education

The purpose of this study is to develop an E-learning system using a map for elementary school education. Concepts of developed system are the following; It is simple and easy to use; Learner's autonomy is important; Collaboration and data sharing in various levels are possible. The system provides mesh map on a base map, a legend and some tools through the Internet. The painting tool of 5 x 5 = 25 meshes with colors defined in a legend is used a pupil. The color indicates the usage of the area of the mesh, e.g., a school, a rice paddy, a forest, etc. A browsing tool of a mesh map is used. Nine hundreds (30 x 30) meshes are a good unit for a class of Japanese elementary school. The pupils' school is located in the center of the mesh map. The position data of all elementary schools in Japan are registered into the system. A mesh is a square whose side is 100m. We designated metadata to manage, reuse and share a mesh map including a legend. A function for inter-school collaboration is realized. RDF and XML technologies are used in metadata, mesh data and legend data. We implemented the system using base map data and some primitive graphic functions supplied by Cyber Japan Map System of Geographical Survey Institute in Japan.
