The chitinase gene (chiA) of Hyphantria cunea nuclear polyhedrosis virus (HcNPV) and Bombyx mori nuclear polyhedrosis virus Soochow strain (BmNPVsu) were sequenced. The ORF of HcNPV chiA 1662nt and BmNPVsu chiA 1656nt encoded respectively protein of 553 and 551 amino acid. Comparing with other chitinase gene from baculoviruses, the homology of nucleotide and amino acid are much high. The ChiA from baculoviruses were compared with the deduced amino acid from Serratia marcescens ChiA, and the results show 47.8~58.5% identities. It was possible that baculovirus acquired the chitinase gene from a bacterium via horizontal gene transfer. Independing branch of Lymantria dispar nuclear polyhedrosis virus (LdNPV) is on the root of phylogenetic tree, the others are divided two groups, one group make up of Helicoverpa armigera nuclear polyhedrosis virus (HaNPV) and Helicoverpa zea nuclear polyhedrosis virus (HzNPV), the second group is composed of the remains.
