There is increased awareness of anthropogenicfactors affecting climate change and urgency toslow the negative impact. Greenhouse gases,oxides of Nitrogen and contrails resulting fromaviation affect the climate in different anduncertain ways. This paper develops a flexiblesimulation and optimization softwarearchitecture to study the trade-offs involved inreducing emissions. The software environmentis used to conduct analysis of two approachesfor avoiding contrails using the concepts ofcontrail frequency index and optimal avoidancetrajectories.
