The wind induced hydrodynamics of Lake Neusiedl focusing mainly on the pelagicareas were successfully explored by using up-to-date Aanderaa recording currentmeters. In this very shallow lake, largely covered by reed, apart from oscillatorymotions large scale baywide horizontal gyres were found to be predominant in longstable stormy periods. Bays with the same orientation showed circulation in thesame sense of revolution, due to the similarities in the surface wind shear stressdistribution. Interbay water exchange processes can be interpreted as a combinedmechanism of oscillatory and circulatory motions. At connecting straits, oscillatingwater masses are flushed away by the existing circulatory motion, thus promoting thenet exchange, which would be cumulatively very small in pure oscillatory conditions.Recommendations to extend the research to the reed covered areas also are given.
