Introduction of hot metal desulphurising in the hot metal ladles at the Umuiden BOS2 plant, followed by a change in the desulphurising agent, led to a dramatic decrease in ladle life. Thorough investigation of spent linings revealed a number of reasons for the increased wear, the most important being low lining temperatures and chemical attack. Changing ladle design and improving logistics and repair procedures successfully solved the temperature problem. Corrosion was successfully reduced by changing the complete refractory lining, including bottom and sidewall bricks, castables and purge plugs. Results of the new ASC lining are very promising: ladle life has been raised to some 800 heats. A further improvement programme has been started to reach 1,000 heats by the end of 2005.
