Using Water Quality to Track Sanitary Sewer Pipeline Conditions

Nashville's sewer system consists of over 2,400 miles of sewer and includes over 42,000 sanitaryrnsewer manholes. As in most cities, the trunk sewers lie along several tributary streams and rivers.rnAlthough the trunk sewers are subject to periodic inspection, manholes along the trunk sewerrnsegments can often be damaged or covers removed because of wet weather or vandalism. ThernDepartment of Water and Sewerage Services has found water quality sample collection to be anrninvaluable source of information in their ongoing effort to ensure the sewer pipeline remains sealedrnto the fullest extent possible to prevent inflow as well as overflow. Water quality sample results canrnprovide valuable information to "track" any possible sewer pipeline maintenance issues as well asrnother pollutant sources, such as illegal direct connections to the tributary streams.
