Due to presence of ash in natural graphite, interactions between iron and natural graphite have been shown to be very different in character compared with that between iron and pure graphite. Those interactions between natural graphite and the iron droplet could be summarised as follows: 1. Carbon and sulfur transfer; 2. Formation of interfacial layer; 3. Chemical reactions between droplet and interfacial layer. Formation of the interfacial layer partially blocked the contact between the droplet and natural graphite and resulted in a decrease in the rate of carbon and sulfur transfer. It could be expected that if the carbonaceous materials contained ash, which is higher in liquidus temperature, it is possible that chemical reactions between the metal and carbonaceous material could lead to the formation of interfacial layer which will subsequently influence the wettability at the interface . Also the partial blockage at the interface could retard the interactions.
