Nickel metal hydride batteries today represent the fastest growing market segment for rechargeable batteries due to the high energy density and more environmentally acceptable chemistry offered by this technology. Due to the high energy density of nickel metal hydride batteries coupled with high power density and long cycle life, this battery chemistry has been identified as the only viable near term technology for practical electric vehicles, including cars, vans, trucks, as well as other forms of electrically powered transportation such as scooters, bicycles, and three-wheelers. Recent advances in negative and positive active materials and advanced cell designs are expected to offer performance approaching the USABC long term goals for EV batteries. This paper provides a review of Ovonic technology and up-dates recent developments in materials and cell development for both consumer electronic and EV applications, and highlights areas for future development.
