An approach to identifying potential 'barriers' to thernrelease or transport of contaminants from the candidaternYucca Mountain HLW repository is developed. Thisrnapproach begins by completely eliminating all barriersrn('full neutralization'), then adds the barriers back in oneby-rnone. This approach helps identify additional potentialrnbarriers that might otherwise have been obscured by thernpresence of other barriers, such as the waste container.rnThe results of the analyses show that many barriers, somernof which are primarily "engineered", some of which arernprimarily "natural", contribute substantially to hazardrnreduction.
