General and Site-Specific Case Studies of Compliance with the LT2ESWTR Regulatory Framework Under Varied Conditions

Under the Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT2ESWTR), membranefiltration is designated as one of the 'toolbox technologies' that may be used to achieveCryptosporidium reduction. As a result, the USEPA prepared the Membrane FiltrationGuidance Manual (MFGM) to assist the water treatment community with the implementation ofmembrane filtration for rule compliance. Although the LT2ESWTR is only specificallyapplicable to the reduction of Cryptosporidium by federal mandate, the rule and associatedguidance were carefully developed to accommodate the translation of this membrane regulatoryframework to a broader range of pathogens, including Giardia, viruses, and bacteria.
