Initial development of the U. S. Air Force EarthRadar system for detection of buried UXO was completed in April 1996. This system is capable of using three sets of antennas simultaneously for depth detection from a few centimeters to tens of meters. In order to satisfy the U. S. Marine Corps battlefield requirement, real time acquisition, processing and display capabilities were later introduced into the software package. Since April 1996, tests under controlled conditions of inert mines and missiles have been conducted in a variety of ground conditions at different U. S. military bases. In addition, several missionoriented search activities were conducted for recovery of buried penetrator missiles for the U. S. Air Force, Army, Defense special Weapons Agency, and Navy. This paper provides details of the developed technology and elaborates on several of the tests. The current efforts include GPS integration, threedimensional image reconstruction, design and development of the next generation antenna, and prototype deployment of an autonomous system.
