The method involves performing proximity detection through sent electromagnetic signals and by analysis of signals back scattered at objects e.g. vehicles (4-7) found in a visual field (3) of a motor vehicle. Movement component of a detected object is characterized and estimated from back scattered signals by using a Kalman filter. A position and expansion of the detected object is specified by a temporally accumulated two-dimensional Fuzzy quantity. The detection is performed via a radar system and/or a Lidar system.
