A FRAMEWORK TO STUDY TECHNOLOGY USE:ALTERNATIVES TO TECHNOLOGYACCEPTANCE MODEL

Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) has been extensively studied in the MIS area. Like other theories, TAMrnhas its limitations. First, it assumes only voluntary acts of users. Second, it addresses technology use only inrnthe individual level. The purpose of this paper is then to discuss various theories from different areas (I.e.,rnorganizational theory, marketing, and strategy) to suggest that some existing theories would have theoreticalrnand practical usefulness in explaining technology use. Drawing on the Astley and Van de Ven (1983)?srnframework, this paper categorizes some selected theories into four categories based on two dimensions:rnorganizational/individual levels and the extent of voluntarism/determinism in technology acceptance andrndiscuss some implications of each of these categories for future MIS research.
