DETERMINANTS OF IS OUTSOURCING DECISION:DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTEGRATEDMODEL AND TEST

There has been considerable research interest on the determinants of outsourcing of Information Systems.However, most of the past studies are quite fragmented and no comprehensive study and model exists. Basedon four theoretical models (resource-based theory, resource dependence theory, transaction cost theory, andagency cost theory), we propose an integrated model of IS outsourcing determinants. The model contains nineconstructs. The relationships between the constructs are validated using survey data from companies in HongKong. Based on the results, we derived a reduced model of IS outsourcing determinants. Our results show thatmarket uncertainty of IS resources and outsourcing agency factors affect significantly the outsourcing costs.Furthermore, we find that market structure and IS outsourcing costs (agency costs and transaction costs) affectIS outsourcing decisions.
