A probability of detection (POD) demonstration test and analysis is the best available method for quantifying the detection capability of a nondestructive evaluation (NDE) system. The two common POD analysis methods in use today, hit/miss and a versus a, are based on well-known and well-established statistical methods. However, it takes more than a statistician to do POD. This paper is Part II in a series. Part I, which was presented at the 2011 ASNT Spring Conference, discusses how basic knowledge of NDE systems as well as basic knowledge of the underlying statistical methods is required to ensure the methods are applied correctly and the results are valid. Part II discusses how statistics and NDE can work together to address measurement uncertainty associated with flaw sizing and how it relates to POD.
