In this paper, a method to determine the two essentialcontrol parameters of Proportional Assist Ventilation (PAV) isintroduced. It uses positive feedback control theory todetermine the two control parameters K1 and K2, in which K1is calculated by ErsX[A_e/(1+A_e)] and K2 is calculated byRrsX[A_r/(1+A_r)] where A_e and A_r are the amplifications ofelastance (Ers) and resistance (Rrs) components respectively.These two parameters are determined according to patient’sconditions. The ventilatory characteristics of PAV responses tovariations in K1 and K2 values were tested separately. Resultsshowed that with this method of determining K1 and K2 values,PAV could provide proper breathing patterns to overcomedifferent respiratory diseases proportionally.
