Analysis of Chinese-English Mixed Language Query Reformulation Strategies and Patterns During Web Searching

With the increasing number of multilingual webpages onrnthe Internet, cross-language information retrieval hasrnbecome an important research issue. In cultures wherernpeople speak both Chinese and English, using mixedrnlanguage in oral speaking and web searching is a commonrnphenomenon. This study employs semi-structuredrninterviews and query log analysis to examine the queryrnreformulation strategies and patterns regarding Chinese-rnEnglish mixed language queries, and to determine whyrnsearch engine users utilize certain reformulation strategies.rnThe results can inform information scientists and IR systemrndesigners to enhance cross-language controlledrnvocabularies and develop discovery platforms forrnmultilingual content, and improve search engines to providernusers with more relevant results. The findings could also bernexpanded to other language combinations that wouldrnimprove search engine designs.
