Relatively uniform polymeric microspheres, the diameters ranging from 2.5 to 100 μm, and the coefficients of variation being close to 10%, were prepared by the ordinary suspension polymerization of either styrene or MMA based monomers. A particular microporous glass membrane (SPG) provided uniform monomer droplets continuously when monomer was allowed to permeate through the micropores under the carefully controlled nitrogen pressure. These droplets were quite stable during the polymerization, and the polymer particles retained their size and uniformity. Porous structure and incorporation of functional groups attract a wide variety of applications.
