Montmorillonite (MMT) was modified with methacrylic acid (unneutralized or neutralized by sodium hydroxide) and the methacrylic polymer/MMT nanocomposite was prepared via monomer in situ polymerization. The structures of modified MMT and nanocomposite were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). Finally, the methacrylic polymer/MMT nanocomposite was applied in the leather tanning process to examine its tanning properties. The results of XRD, FT-IR and ~(13)C-NMR showed that there were interactions between sodium methacrylic and MMT. Methacrylic acid or sodium methacrylic had been polymerized between MMT layers and the methacrylic polymer/MMT nanocomposite formed belongs to intercalated nanocomposite. The application results showed the wet-heat resistance and physical-mechanical properties of nanocomposite-tanned leather prior to pure methacrylic polymer tanned leather.
