In this paper, a novel High Power Density Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (HPDPMSM) is proposed. The proposed machine has better flux weakening ability with the bypass ribs added in the flux barriers. The performances are analyzed and compared with a HPDPMSM without bypass rib on 2-D finite-element analysis (FEA), including the torque ability, speed range and efficiency. The results show that the two HPDPMSMs can generate comparable output torque, the HPDPMSM with bypass rib have wider constant power range and higher efficiency under the flux weakening operation. A prototype of the HPDPMSM with bypass rib are manufactured and tested to validate the FEA results.
