Considerations on urban form in the old quarter of Cadiz (Spain) Part1 -Block formation and transformation-

The objectives of the research focus on the clarification theurban and block formation of the old quarter in Cadiz, which islocated in the South of Spain, based on fieldworks and analysisof historical maps. Authors discuss the features of Cadiz oldquarter, which present peculiar characteristics in terms of urbanform.In fieldworks conducted from January 2009 to November 2009for the assessment of the heritage properties in San Franciscoarea, northwards the old quarter; 88 heritage properties wereassessed during 10 months. Field surveyors visited the sites totake photographs, collected historical documents, includinginterviews to the inhabitants and drawing of block and dwellings.Also, data collection about urban elements was performed:street width measurement on-site; establishment of buildingheight by the number of floors. Both parameters were contrastedwith available data from CAD and GIS files from the planningoffice of Cadiz.
