IP telephony: Where are we today?

The recent interest in IP telephony has led to arntremendous increase of standardization activities in thernarea. The two main standards bodies in the area of IPrntelephony are the International TelecommunicationrnUnion’s (ITU-T) Study Group (SG) 16 and the InternetrnEngineering Task Force (IETF), with the EuropeanrnTelecommunication Standards Institute's (ETSI) TIPHONrnproject generating supplementary standards in this area asrnwell. In addition, forums such as the InternationalrnMultimedia Teleconferencing Consortium (IMTC), thernIntelligent Network Forum (INF), the InternationalrnSoftswitch Consortium (ISC), the Electronic ComputerrnTelephony Forum (ECTF), and the MIT's InternetrnTelephony Consortium (ITC) are looking into variousrnother aspects that aim at the growth of this industry. Thisrnpaper gives a broad overview of the work undertaken byrnthese organizations.
