The purpose of this paper is to explore various traffic modeling aspects and theories that may overcome some of the limitations in existing microscopic simulation models and programs. A multi-regime microscopic traffic simulation approach has been formulated featuring realistic and comprehensive car-following and lane changing logic. A simulation program implementing the multi-regime approach was developed in C++ using an object-oriented design concept. The simulation logic and program was extensively validated by real-world microscopic datasets using different validation procedures. The Multi-Regime Simulation (MRS) results clearly demonstrate the efficiency and validity of the proposed models for a broad range of traffic secnarios.
