Eucalyptus camaldulensis logs were harvested from forest sites in central Taiwan, and fungi of the Ophiostoma genus were screened and 28 strains were obtained. These were inoculated on wood chips to evaluate their effects on weight losses of wood and the amounts of acetone extractive degraded. At the same time, GC-MS was engaged. By using internal standards and database of GC-MS ionic fragments, changes in lipophilic compounds were analyzed. Among these fatty acid, hydrocarbon, sterol compounds, sterol ester and triglycerides were noted. After 2 wks of fungal treatment, we found that 6 of the strains were capable of reducing the lipophilic fractions by more than 60% in a 2-wk treatment.
