The potential of the Supermasscolloider? to generate high quality fines material by grinding reject fibre from a thermomechanical pulp (TMP) process has been evaluated. Fines produced in the grinder, contained a high proportion (63 - 72% by mass) of fibrillar fines i.e., long, slender fibrils with a high aspect ratio. In Campbell handsheets, these fines gave sheets of higher density and greater strength, at a given fines content, than standard TMP fines. This is attributed to their high surface area and bonding ability. The results of this study also indicate that further investigation to evaluate the potential of the Supermasscolloider? to externally fibrillate and enhance the bonding properties of the long fibre fraction is warranted.
