A new in-situ deactivation enhanced atom transfer radical polymerisation (DE-ATRP) is developed to synthesize a dendritic 2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) based polymer which shows a high transfection capability and low cytotoxicity. Furthermore, pD-E fares more favourably than other common transfection agents such as SuperFect®, poly(ethylene imine) (PEI) and poly(L-lysine)(PLL) in terms of a combination of both transfection and cytotoxicity.
