We proposed a new preparation method of emulsion-suspension composite particles based on themechanism study of the composite particle formation process in the emulsion-suspension convertingstep of emulsion-suspension polymerization. According to this study, composite particles were formedthrough seed coagulation, whereby emulsion polymer is deposited on the surface of a monomer droplet.This phenomenon indicates that the seed coagulation of the emulsion polymer would also occur whenusing a suspension polymer particle instead of a monomer droplet as a seed material. In addition, wehave discovered that emulsion-suspension composite particles, suspension polymer particles coatedwith emulsion polymers, are formed by adding a coagulating agent to the mixture of the water dispersionof emulsion and suspension polymer while stirring, and from an industrial perspective, this simpleprocedure has many excellent features.
