DOES THE EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE OF IT PROJECT MANAGERS INFLUENCE THE PERCEPTION OF PROJECT SUCCESS IN THE PROJECT'S CUSTOMER?

This report provides the results of an empirical investigation centered across the areas of Project Management, Information Technology (IT), and Emotional Intelligence. The objective of this research is to evaluate the level of influence an IT Project Manager's Emotional Intelligence has on the customer's perception of project success. Data was collected and analyzed from fifty-six IT project managers. The Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i) assessment tool was used to the IT Project Manager's Emotional Quotient. A separate customer satisfaction survey was sent to the project's customer to evaluate their impression of project success. This paper will present the findings of the strong negative statistical correlation that was discovered between the EQ-i scale General Mood and the customer's perception of project success. These findings are important to IT project management practitioners because they help managers expand their understanding regarding what customer's perceive as an influence to project success.
