SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES IN SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED ENTERPRISES (SMES) - A WORLD VIEW

Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) are the economic backbone of several countries. In Europe and the United States they constitute more than 80% of all industries. In this scenario, the sustainable performance and the environmental impact of SMEs has grown into a worldwide issue. Environmental lapse on part of SMEs can lead to widespread global environmental impact. SMEs from Europe are pioneers in following environmentally sustainable practices and their methods are adapted by various countries. However, SMEs everywhere face barriers to adapting and implementing these practices. The most commonly found problems are lack of finance, lack of information, and lack of expertise. Although most countries have similar problems, some of the problems are mote predominant in developing countries as opposed to developed countries. This paper reviews different practices from all over the world and compares issues in implementing sustainable practices in SMEs.
