Specialty foundation construction in the Twin Cities

The geotechnical community in the Twin Cities has for decades suggested alternative and innovative solutions for ground improvement and foundation support. Increasingly, architects, structural engineers, developers and owners are discovering the advantages of specialty foundation construction as a means to develop marginal sites and build safely below and adjacent to existing structures, as well as to strengthen existing foundations for restoration or upgrade applications. This paper presents an overview of projects completed in the last 25 years in the Twin Cities where specialty ground modification methods made the difference in the development, construction and/or remediation of the project. The case histories will highlight the use of high capacity micro-piles, jet grouting methods, vibro techniques and soil nailing.
