GSU TRANSFORMER HEALTH MONITOR - COMBINING EMI DETECTION WITH ACOUSTIC EMISSION MEASUREMENT

This paper will provide an overview of the GSU transformer health monitor currently being developed and deployed at American Electric Power (AEP). Generator Step-Up (GSU) transformers are a critical part of a generating plant. If a GSU transformer fails, the generating unit can no longer deliver energy to the transmission system. This can take the unit out of service for many months if a replacement is not immediately available. In addition, the damage caused to nearby equipment can be substantial. Figure 1 illustrates the destructive potential of large transformer fires.
