Progressive sugar complexes require optimal utilization of resources, to be ahead of times in conserving the scarce natural resources. Co-generation. Generation of chilled water for Air conditioning from the available hot condensate and distillation of fermented molasses are the main areas to be looked into. Modern sugar plants are now acknowledging the potential as well as the need of conserving energy through introduction of high-pressure boilers, extraction-cum-condensing turbines etc. This paper deals with the blue print of energy conservation measures followed at The Deccan Sugars, Sugar Division of Nava Bharat Ferro Alloys Ltd., to bring down the process steam consumption from 59.96% to 33-36% on cane. There is scope for further reduction to 30% through waste heat recovery from hot condensates and flue-gases. This paper can boost up not only the confidence levels of the sugar industry but also the economic production levels through energy conservation while simultaneously producing excellent quality sugar.
