REFRACTORIES MANUFACTURED IN CHINA FOR THE CHINESE DRIVEN ALUMINUM MARKETS

This paper details the successful efforts of a medium sized Canadian refractory manufacturer using technology developed in North America applied to the rapidly growing primary aluminum industry in China. By way of technology transfer and ownership of two Wholly Owned Foreign Ventures in the PRC, Clayburn Industries has become the leading supplier of barrier materials to the aluminum industry in The Peoples'' Republic of China and to smelters outside of China using smelter technology designed by Chinese engineering companies.rnIn July of 1995 the late Bob Uhles walked into my office in his role as Sales Manager for Aluminum Markets and said, "I have good news and bad news." He went on; "The good news is that I have an order for CLAYBURN® DRI-BARRIER MIX™ from China. The bad news is that I am not sure I want to ship it." My response was, "You are right to have doubts about shipping what could well be 40 tonnes of samples to China. If you think that you will receive repeat orders for materials made in Canada based on the satisfactory performance of this material, you are wrong. The freight and import duties if nothing else will preclude such repeat orders. However, we should consider manufacturing this and other products there if we believe that there is a viable potential."
