Distributed training: the MSU computer laboratory departmental trainer program's second year

With the advent of microcomputers, distributed computing is here to stay. With distributed computing comes distributed expertise; people must learn to run their own computing centers, no matter what the size of the computers. In trying to deal with increased demands for training in a limited-resource environment, we have taken the natural step of distributing the responsibility for the training. With appropriate training materials, a person who knows how to use a program can lead someone else through the process of learning. The training materials must be sufficiently detailed to include training on all major features of the software that people regularly use and include conceptual material that takes the place of lectures. The commitment to distributed training must be real. Sufficient staff must be devoted to developing training materials because the materials must continue to evolve with the software it teaches and new materials must be created to meet the demands for training on new software.
