This presentation will discuss the impact of the space radiation environment on the microelectronic and photonic components of a typical satellite Guidance, Control and Navigation (GC&N) system. The sub-systems of a typical GC&N system will be examined to: 1. Identify critical microelectronic and photonics components, e.g. microprocessor, microcontroller, memory, etc. 2. The impact of both ionizing radiation and displacement damage on these components 3. Methods to mitigate these radiation effects including: 3.1 Component Selection 3.2 Component Screening; Test and Characterization 3.3 Circuit design 3.4 Shielding Component selection will address topics that include the use of radiation hardened or tolerant components in lieu of "soft" components and sources of information to assist in the identification of these components. Screening, test and characterization will identify standard military and commercial radiation effects screening and characterization methods, application guidelines and any shortfalls associated with these documents. Circuit design will briefly examine mitigation methods that include error correction and detection and redundancy. The efficacy of shielding to mitigate radiation effects will also be discussed. It is the overall goal of this presentation to provide a context for the information discussed in the prior presentations that concentrated on specific component types or technologies.
