Presented is an expression to for the efficiency of a gear pair based on the nominal position of contact. This expression is valid for generalized gear pairs with any shaft angle and offset (viz., spur and spiral hypoid gears along with single and double enveloping worm gears), and depends on the instantaneous pressure angle, spiral angle, speed ratio, and friction coefficient. Simplified expressions are given for predicting the traction coefficient in fully flooded, highly concentrated contact. Also included is an expression for the windage losses in the gear pair. This expression depends on the level that the gears are submerged into the lubricant and individual gear speeds. An example of a spiral hyperboloidal gear pair is given to illustrate the determination of efficiency in spatial gear pairs based on the relationships presented.
