An Affordable Approach to Rotorcraft Vehicle Management Systems

There are a number of important trends in the construction of aircraft avionics. One of thernmost prominent is the substitution of Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) electronics where purposebuilt,rnunique systems were traditionally used. Another is the increasing need for and cost impact ofrnsoftware certification on the overall system cost. In the Rotorcraft Vehicle Management Systemrn(RVMS) project, sponsored by the Army Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD), these issuesrnwere examined, with the overall goal to look for reduced-cost methods to provide vehicle managementrnfunctions to both existing and future Army rotorcraft.
