The properties of woven wire cloth may be enhanced by a process loosely referred to as "sintering," which depends upon molecular diffusion-bonding. The same process may also be used to laminate multiple layers of wire cloth together, thereby creating a diverse and highly useful class of permeable materials that is still not widely known within the engineering community. Sintered wire mesh laminates may be designed with a wide range of desirable mechanical properties, pore sizes and controlled permeabilities, and have found their way into many different applications. This presentation discusses the sintering process, wire mesh, and sintered wire laminates, including a discussion of applications, fabrication of these materials, and technical and metallurgical considerations.
