Slitter coating damage and dust generation have common causes within a slitting operation. In most cases where there is damaged material, there also is excessive dust. To reduce coating damage and minimize dust generation we must first understand the causes. Presented are seven shear-slitting geometric relationships that directly affect the quality of finished, production roll goods. Some of these causes can be controlled, simply by utilizing basic knife set-up procedures derived from a better understanding of slitting geometric relationships. In addition to providing recommended knife and knife holder settings, this paper will give attendees clear-cut action items to take back to their operations for evaluating and correcting knife set-up errors. Also, options for selection of knife shapes and holder tooling design are presented.
