The assembly to coat the edge surfaces of a longitudinal workpiece, with a liquid coating, has at least one adjustable coating head with a coating slit (5) aligned along the direction of travel and matching the cross section of the edge at the entry end. The slit is linked to a coating feed, which opens into side slits at the coating slit. The side slits are divided into at least two part-slits (10,13) with a small gap between them. The part-slits are in a housing (15) or at two separate housing sections. Each side slit is followed by a longitudinal jet slit (11,14) along the line of the coating slit.
