EPC 2005 Misapplication of Dry Running Seals in Low Temperature Process Service

Repeated seal failures and high maintenance costs led to a Root Cause Failure Analysis which showed that the seal and seal support system design was not applicable for the ethylene product pump service. While this technology is applicable in some cases, it is not intended for every service. Specifically, pumps that experience "large" axial shaft movements may encounter problems with lightly loaded mechanical seals. This paper will present Dupont's experience in its Sabine River Works ethylene plant.
